een film van Karina Beumer, met Ron Beumer, Inge Beumer-de Boer, Erik Beumer, Sylvia Las, Barbara Visser, Victoria Vergult – music composer Igor Kłaczyński – extra camera Ilse van Loon – kleur correcties Lennert De Taeye – Dit project wordt gesteund door het Nederlands Filmfonds en het Mondriaan Fonds.
Dit absurde en ludieke videodagboek vertelt het verhaal van (en door) Ron, die sinds 5 jaar leeft met een Niet Aangeboren Hersenletsel (NAH), waardoor hij verdwaalt en vergeet. Ron heeft zijn leven vastgelegd in dagboeken en hij schrijft nu een boek over zijn leven met NAH. Op het moment dat zijn dochter Karina erachter komt dat Ron haar vergeten is, besluit ze zijn boek te gaan verfilmen.
This surrealistic documentary features and tells the story of Ron, who has lived with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) for 5 years. Although he now gets lost and forgets things, he has documented his whole life in diaries — and is writing a book about living with ABI. When his daughter Karina discovers Ron has forgotten about her, she sets about turning his book into a film.
(…) hovers between real and imagined events. Ron and Karina end up in an adventure about shaping memories and visualising thoughts – about wanting to fill in black holes, obsessively documenting life and seeking a new language so they can meet each other without remembering.
Ce journal vidéo absurde, non linéaire et ludique raconte l’histoire de (et par) Ron, qui vit depuis 5 ans avec une lésion cérébrale acquise (LCA), ce qui fait qu’il se perd et oublie. Ron a consigné toute sa vie dans des journaux intimes et écrit actuellement un livre sur la vie avec une lésion cérébrale acquise. Lorsque sa fille Karina découvre que Ron l’a oubliée, elle décide de faire de son livre un film.

Ron, the filmmaker’s father, has a brain injury that affects his ability to situate himself and retain memories. Upon realising that her father no longer recognises her, the director decides to turn her father’s notebooks into a film that plunges us into the complexities of memory and the brain, full of creativity, humour and tenderness.
Long Synopsis, Visions Du Réel
The director’s father, Ron, is suffering from a brain injury that has impaired his ability to find his bearings or remember events. To keep track of his life, he writes in notebooks. When Karina Beumer realises that her father no longer recognises her, and that his illness seems to be erasing their relationship, she decides to make a film based on his writings and her own memories. In (…), father and daughter create an artistic universe together, blending Ron’s writings and drawings with his daughter’s sets and papier-mâché characters. At the heart of the film is a wholesome and collaborative creation process that brings to life this father-daughter reunion, made possible by the art of cinema. When the daughter asks her father what they will do once they have finished making the film, Ron responds: “another film!” Using a non-linear narrative, the film takes us on a humorous and tender journey through the labyrinth of memory and the brain, while confronting us with existential questions. Ron, le père de la cinéaste, est atteint d’une lésion cérébrale qui affecte sa capacité à se repérer et à retenir ses souvenirs. En réalisant qu’il ne la reconnaît plus, la cinéaste décide de transposer les carnets de son père en un film qui, avec beaucoup de créativité, d’humour et de tendresse, nous plonge dans les dédales de la mémoire et du cerveau.

Ron, le père de la cinéaste, souffre d’une lésion cérébrale qui altère sa capacité à se situer dans l’espace et à se souvenir des événements. Pour conserver une trace de sa vie, il tient des carnets. Lorsque Karina Beumer prend conscience que son père ne la reconnaît plus et que sa maladie semble effacer leur relation, elle décide de réaliser un film à partir des écrits de son père et de ses propres souvenirs. Avec (…), père et fille créent ensemble un univers artistique qui mêle les écrits et les dessins de Ron avec les décors et les personnages en papier mâché de sa fille. Le processus de création, collaboratif et généreux, est au cœur du film et donne vie aux retrouvailles entre un père et sa fille rendues possibles grâce au cinéma. Lorsque la fille demande à son père ce qu’il·elle feront une fois le film terminé, Ron répond : « un autre film ! » À travers un récit non linéaire, le film nous entraîne dans les dédales de la mémoire et du cerveau, avec humour et tendresse, tout en nous confrontant à des questions existentielles. Als die Filmemacherin merkt, dass er sie nicht mehr erkennt, beschliesst sie, die Tagebücher ihres Vaters in einen Film umzusetzen. Mit viel Kreativität, Humor und Zärtlichkeit wird uns ein Einblick in das Labyrinth der Erinnerungen und des Gehirns gewährt.

Miguel A. Reina “[VdR ’23] The description of the director’s father’s brain disease is shown as a Kafkaesque journey with a sense of humor, which raises existentialist reflections and also on whether memory loss implies a loss of identity. But living with the disease becomes more and more serene, although at first it appears as an antagonist who kidnaps Ron Beumer. Step by step, it becomes a life partner who builds another way of approaching existence, much simpler and without worries. It’s a beautiful and moving tribute of the director to his father even though he doesn’t remember having a daughter.”

“But at a key moment, the film’s core antagonist is introduced, the Acquired Brain Injury itself. For Karina it was as if her father had been “kidnapped” and she therefore recreates a sequence in which her dad, played by Ron himself, is bundled into the back of a car. The symbolism continues as Ron walks along a Kafkaesque corridor entering various doors only to re-enter the corridor through another door. At which point Karina follows her father as he places arrows on the ground within his environment to work out how he best can proceed, or indeed tell us, the viewer, precisely where he is. ‘La silicone seconde’ maintains the rhythmic life of a character without a body. A expanding parallel world, neither idyllic nor apocalyptic. We move happily without gravity, like the decorative rock that shelters the spectators that are watching this video. We are, so to speak, suspended, drawn to a sort of inaudible whisper. Words frozen by the impressive authority of language.
