(DISCLAIMER: I helped proofread this art book/project aka I’m biased) Terms of Conditions (title mentioned p381, total 437p, 2021) “… is a choose-your-own-adventure book about a freelancer who simultaneously fires herself and resigns.” by Karina Beumer.

Fun! That’s what this book is. So it looks weird, it’s quite heavy & a big book too. You open the pages, & it asks you to make decisions. Decisions you make redirect you to different pages, different stories & situations, different essays until you reach the Epilogue. The End. But if you want, you can start again and make different decisions, different experience, etc…

What you get is ‘non linear’ reading, and I wonder if I after 4 tries, read the whole book? I like that. It means it’s easy to leave laying around, and pick it up again now and then, maybe get to a point in the book that you haven’t read yet.

What you get is strange illustrations and collages, strange stories and intellectual essays & excerpts on the subject of being a person in late-capitalist society (fuck yeeeeah 🤠 the good stuff!). The whole atmosphere is absurd, uncanny, silly, dreamy and reflective. This is what I like: The balance, between the artist obviously having a good time making this piece of art VS the heavy heady subject matter, it is just right.

Karina has her own style. It’s quirky and weird, between a good joke & a bad trip. It works well with stories, example, about a person living a working life, a house, suddenly being surrounded by strange forms, creatures that move about the house, slowly, but not being bothered by them. What is this? I dunno, but I enjoyed the atmosphere.

So if you want to try & experience another type of reading, this book could be it.

Vragen onderweg: In hoeverre ben je zelf al een product? Wie werkt voor wie? Is het werk als je er niet voor betaald wordt? En hoe zit het met mensen die veel geld verdienen aan je specifieke onzekerheid, aan je angsten, verlangens en dromen?

Speciaal voor de book launch ontwikkelde ik een choose-your-own-adventure tentoonstelling, waarin enkele hoofdstukken uit het boek tot leven worden gewekt. Deze tentoonstelling/book launch opent op 29 mei in de Bovenkamer van Fred & Ferry Gallery, van 13u tot 18u, en is te bezoeken tot en met 19 juni.

NB. Omdat het boek over arbeidscondities spreekt leek het me logisch en spannend om mijn werk hiervoor deels uit te besteden: ik stuurde een vacature uit voor een vervanger die mij voor vijf achtereenvolgende weken (20 oktober 2020 tot 23 november 2020)  in mijn artistieke praktijk (betaald) zou gaan vervangen. Uit de sollicitanten koos ik Annelein Pompe die in deze periode verder werkte aan Terms of Conditions, waarvoor ze de introductie schreef, De mens die niets regelde, een extra verteller introduceerde en een interview afnam met Lisette Olsthoorn. Ook gaf Annelein een lezing LUCA Brussels over de rol van animatie in mijn werk, Annelein volgde mijn e-mails op en schreef een verslag over haar ervaringen: Dagboek van een vervanger. Op 13 juni gaat Annelein namens mij het podium op in iii, Den Haag, een videoscreening en Q&A die in de vervangingsperiode werd uitgesteld wegens COVID-19 maatregelen. Annelein en ik besloten dat Annelein deze Q&A toch zal doen, omdat zij dit zo vast legden in het vervangingsprojectcontract. Annelein zal op 29 mei van 14u-17u aanwezig zijn in de BOVENKAMER van FRED&FERRY GALLERY om boeken te signeren.

Specially for the book launch I developed a choose-your-own-adventure exhibition in which some chapters of the book will be brought to life. The book launch opens on May 29 in the Bovenkamer of Fred & Ferry Gallery, 13h-18h and is on view until June 19.

NB. Because the book speaks about working conditions, it seemed logical and exciting to Karina to partly outsource her work: Karina send out a vacancy for a substitute to replace her in her artistic practice for five consecutive weeks (20 oktober 2020 to 23 november 2020). Out of the applicants, Karina choose Annelein Pompe who in this periode continued working on Terms of Conditions, for which she wrote the introduction, The human who didn’t arrange anything, introduced an other narrator and conducted an interview with Lisette Olsthoorn. Also Annelein gave a lecture in LUCA Brussels about the role of animation in the work of Karina Beumer, followed up on Karina’s work emails and wrote a report about her experiences during this period: Dagboek van een vervanger (Diary of a substitute).
