It was a very inspiring and bold pitch that felt like a social experiment we want to be part of. We were impressed by the way in which Karina connected her personal experience as a writer to larger, universal topics that many people can relate to. In a brave and perhaps utopian attempt at dismantling her own ego, she is asking pertinent questions about productivity, authorship, identity – in the creative sector and beyond. “How does one become an institution?” “Can a creative process be outsourced?” “Why do we sometimes want to become someone else?”

The project plays with the boundaries of filmmaking, using film as a component of a larger, interactive project, and a pretext for an exchange and encounter in the vast space in-between individual protons. We believe it will result in a wonderful network of intimate connections that we, as an audience, will be offered a glimpse into through this humorous, witty, and empathetic work.

About Public Universal Television

Public Universal Television is a new art performance series by Leslie Lawrence & Sophia Simensky, developing their practice of performing the artistic production of popular media in co-operation with their audience. Residing in the former theosophical temple of Amsterdam, they have created an esoteric society of video makers looking at news ways to make co-operative media. For each performance they co-operate with a different artist, making them the guest host of a new tv show, the filming of which is then staged for the live audience as a piece of performance art.

Public Universal Television is supported by the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts)

About The Original Karina Beumer

To investigate where her work addiction stems from, Karina Beumer sends out a job advertisement for the position of Karina Beumer. When the applicants completely take over her work as an artist and make it even more successful, Karina wants to take back control of her artistry, and consequently herself, in this social experiment. But this turns out not to be as straightforward as she thought.

De Originele Karina Beumer is made in collaboration with the VPRO and is supported by the NPO-fund, Netherlands Film Fund and Mondriaan fonds.
