‘La silicone seconde’ maintains the rhythmic life of a character without a body. A expanding parallel world, neither idyllic nor apocalyptic.
We move happily without gravity, like the decorative rock that shelters the spectators that are watching this video. We are, so to speak, suspended, drawn to a sort of inaudible whisper. Words frozen by the impressive authority of language.

Karina Beumer file comme un gardon à travers la forêt bleue. Aux allures de garçonne, elle entretient la vie rythmée d’un personnage sans corps ou, pour être plus précis, dont les membres s’éparpillent au fil des vidéos, des dessins, des sculptures qui lui sont consacrés. Un monde parallèle, ni idyllique ni apocalyptique, sans limite même, en expansion comme le serait, nous dit-on, l’univers. C’est drôle, c’est touchant, parfois inquiétant. On se déplace allègrement sans gravité, comme les roches décoratives qui abritent certaines scènes de ses films. Nous sommes pour ainsi dire suspendus, attirés par une sorte de chuchotement inaudible, des paroles gelées par l’impressionnante autorité du langage. Libéré en quelque sorte, émancipé d’un devoir si souvent remis sur la table. Comprendre n’est pas le sujet. Karina Beumer invente avec malice quelque chose qui nous échappe et nous appartient toutefois, comme l’expression d’une humanité sans borne, sans préjugé.

“Karina Beumer werkt in dit eerste deel van de residentie verder op de video ‘Deep Dark Mountain Thoughts’ en dwaalt net als Molly, de protagonist uit de video, gedurende twee maanden door de residentie. Molly, die in de residentie verblijft, wordt getuige van de geboorte van een soortgenoot. Een creatieproces dat Beumer op verschillende plekken in de residentie activeert. Tegelijkertijd worden de avonturen van Molly gedocumenteerd in een residentie-dagboek en krijgt iedereen die in het huis rondloopt een plaats in Molly’s queeste. Beumers’ werk vertrekt steeds vanuit de tekenkunst, maar leidt vaak tot andere kunstvormen zoals muziek, sculpturen, videokunst, publicaties en animatie. In haar vreemde universum brengt zij banale zaken in contact met eigen creaties. Haar werk is kritisch humoristisch.”
“In this first part of the residency, Karina Beumer continues to work on the video “Deep Dark Mountain Thoughts” and wanders, just like Molly the protagonist from the video, through the residency. Molly, who resides at the residency, witnesses the birth of a fellow-species. A creation process that is activated by Beumer in various corners of the residency. At the same time, Molly’s adventures are documented in a residency-diary and everyone who walks around in the house is entangled in Molly’s quest. Beumers’ work always starts from drawing, but often leads to other art forms such as music, sculptures, video art, publications and animation. In her alien universe she connects banal issues with personal creations. Her work is critically humorous.”

“Voor mij ontwaar ik enkele lange smalle gestalten. (…) Ze lijken op naakte roze vingers, maar dan zonder gewrichten of beenderen. Van veraf lijken ze op rechtopstaande darmen of tentakels vastgevroren in hun beweging. De laatste dagen kom ik ze overal in het huis tegen, zelfs tot in de badkamer en slaapkamer. Maar hun stille voorkomen ervaar ik niet als bedreigend. Integendeel, ik heb de indruk dat wij elkaars gezelschap opzoeken. (…) Toch bewaar ik een gezonde afstand. Wie weet wat er aan hen kleeft, wat in hen leeft, of juist niet. Ik onderdruk mijn nieuwsgierigheid, zoals ik de laatste tijd al te heftige gevoelens onderdruk.”
